Why are elderberries considered a super fruit?
Super fruits are known to contain powerful antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and other health promoting properties. Elderberries are a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being. Rich in antioxidants, that may stabilize free radicals and protect the body from cellular damage.* They are a natural source of vitamins C, E and A, which may boost our immune system. Elderberries are packed with anthocyanines and polyphenols, which have antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties.*
Dark berries like elderberry, rate very high on the ORAC scale, marking the effectiveness of reducing oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has been linked to most major diseases in the body.** The ORAC value, or oxygen radical absorbancy capacity, is a measure food scientists use to calculate the ability of foods to fight free radical cells that may cause cancer.

What does USDA organic certified mean?
The USDA Certified Organic seal assures consumers that the department of agriculture’s guidelines and standards for organic farming methods and production were followed. In order for a farm to be certified organic it must have not had any non-organic materials applied to it for the past three years. Organic-certified farms must have an organic system plan and records that verify compliance with that plan. Being certified assures the consumer they are getting an organic product.

Why do you need to prune an elderberry plant?
Pruning is important to keep the plant healthy, vigorous and productive. It is important to remove all diseased, dead or damaged wood. Pruning also eliminates mites that are found in the top 18” of the plants.
Is growing elderberries profitable?
If you take care of your plants by feeding, watering and weed control, some growers have experienced producing 5000 lbs. of elderberries per acre. If you are growing conventional (not organic) elderberries, they can bring $1.00 per lb. on the stem. If they are de-stemmed, they can bring $2.00-$2.25 per lb. If you are growing certified organic elderberries and sell them de-stemmed, they can bring $3.00 per lb.
Is it best to plant several cultivars in a field?
Yes. According to the publication “Growing and Marketing Elderberries in Missouri”, published by the University of Missouri Center for Agroforestry, the pollination of elderberries is not well-understood. They could be pollinated by wind and insects. Elderberries are thought to be partially self-fruitful, however research suggests that the plants require cross-pollination, meaning that more than one cultivar in a field will result in more successful pollination.
Should I grow conventional or organic elderberries?
Organically grown foods are perceived by consumers as healthier and safer for the environment. The demand for organically grown foods is increasing. As a grower, you need to weigh the cost vs. profit of each and decide for yourself.
Will Nature’s Organic Haven purchase elderberries from growers for Nature’s Power juice drink?
If they are certified organic elderberries Natures Organic Haven will most likely purchase them. Of course, it depends on our needs.
What is elderberry flour used for?
It can be substituted for other flour and used in the same way. Let your imagination go….

Yes, we sell dried elderflowers.
Is an elder plant the same thing as an elderberry plant?
Yes, same plant. Berries from the plant are called elderberries. Flowers from the plant are called elderflowers.
